Rep. Jeffries: Mueller Is Not De Niro, But 'He Delivered'

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said Thursday that former special counsel Robert Mueller's congressional testimony this week was significant, if not captivating.

"We didn't expect, we weren't trying to entertain the American people," Jeffries said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" the day after Mueller testified. "We wanted to educate and inform the American people.

"We didn't invite Robert De Niro to testify," Jeffries added, in reference to the actor's recent recurring role on "Saturday Night Live." "We invited Robert Mueller to testify, and in that regard he delivered what we expected."

"It's our job now to present that information to the American people," he said.

Mueller spent six hours testifying before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees about his report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. Jeffries, as a member of the Judiciary Committee, was one of the ones to question Mueller.

In one instance, the congressman asked Mueller about the three elements of criminal obstruction of justice, and asked the special counsel if President Donald Trump's attempts to have White House attorney Don McGahn fire Mueller fit those criteria. While Mueller agreed with Jeffries as he went point-by-point, he did not conclude Trump had committed a crime.

"I don't subscribe necessarily to the way you analyze that," Mueller told Rep. Jeffries. "I am not saying it is out of the ballpark, but I am not supportive of that."
