The number of immigrants who have died in custody with Customs and Border Protection during President Donald Trump’s administration is on par with the Obama Administration, The Washington Examiner reports.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement data obtained by the Examiner through a Freedom of Information Act request shows the number of people who died in ICE custody under both Trump and former President Barack Obama.
Ten people died in ICE custody during Obama’s first year in 2009, five died in 2012 and 12 died in 2016, the final year of his term, according to data from ICE.
Ten people also died in ICE custody during Trump’s first year in office in 2017, and 12 people died in his second year, according to the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
ICE has reported no deaths in its custody during 2019.
The Examiner notes that deaths were much more common in the Bush Administration. Over 30 people died in ICE custody in 2004, and 20 died the next year.
