House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, even after she apologized for statements she made that were condemned as being anti-Semitic, Rep. Steve Scalise said Tuesday.
"She is able to get classified briefings on foreign policy, especially as it relates to Israel, and yet she has made statements, anti-Israel, anti-Jewish statements," said Scalise on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "She has aligned herself with anti-Semitic people as well. She should be removed from the Foreign Affairs committee."
Over the weekend, Omar came under fire after tweeting a comment implying members of Congress were accepting payments from a pro-Israel group in exchange for support. The Minnesota Democrat apologized "unequivocally" for her comments on Monday, but that was not enough, said Scalise.
"She apologized and then went after those same groups," said Scalise. "It clearly wasn't unequivocal and doesn't take the comments back."
Scalise also commented on the tentative agreement reached concerning border funding, saying that a final deal must remove limitations on where the wall can be built and how many detention beds Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will have at its disposal.
Calls to limit detention beds as part of the deal was "ludicrous," said Scalise, as ICE must be able to detain "terrorists and criminals" who are captured.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell early Tuesday said that in order for an agreement to be reached, Democrats will need to walk away from extreme positions dictated by the far left, and Scalise said elements of that side of the Democratic Party have been controlling Pelosi's first few weeks.
