Poll: McCarthy Gets Highest 'Favorability' in Congress

By    |   Tuesday, 25 July 2023 12:58 PM EDT

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is the most "favorably viewed" member of Congress, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll.

The new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey released Tuesday found that 42% of likely voters have a favorable view of McCarthy, including 15% who view him "very favorably." In comparison, 41% say they have an unfavorable idea of him, and 17% said they were not sure how they viewed him.

Despite having the top spot, Rasmussen said that it represents a decline from the 50% who viewed him favorably in early June after he negotiated the debt ceiling agreement with Democrats.

Rasmussen reported at the time that the bipartisan deal bumped McCarthy up 10 percentage points from 40% favorability in January, that report said.

In that poll, 83% of those surveyed said they closely watched the debt ceiling negotiations between Congress and President Joe Biden.

McCarthy's Democratic counterpart, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has a 34% favorability rating with 35% viewing him unfavorably including 22% viewing him "very unfavorably," and another 31% saying they were undecided, Tuesday's poll found.

The survey was conducted with 1,002 likely U.S. voters on July 13 and July 16-17 by Pulse Opinion Research, and has a margin of error of plus/minus 3 percentage points, according to the organization.

In the Senate, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., topped Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., 37% to 26%, among those viewing each of them favorably.

Both are underwater, however, with McConnell having 64% viewing him unfavorably and Schumer having 52% seeing him in an unfavorable light, according to the poll.

Most of Schumer's support comes from Democratic voters with 57% saying they see him at least "somewhat favorably," while just 37% of Republicans support McConnell.

Unaffiliated voters see Schumer as the most favorable with 34%, followed by McCarthy at 32%, Jeffries at 30%, and McConnell at only 17% favorability.

McCarthy is viewed at least somewhat favorably by 47% of "other minorities," 45% by Black voters and 40% of whites, while Jeffries has the most support among Black voters with 40%, followed by 34% of white voters, and 32% of other minorities.

On the Senate side, Schumer gets 39% favorability from other minorities, 37% of whites, and 35% of Blacks, while McConnell gets 27% of white voters, 25% of other minorities, and 21% of Blacks, according to the poll.
