Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said on Thursday that he and several other GOP legislators will filibuster Majority Leader Harry Reid’s gun-control bill when it comes to the Senate floor next month.
“We will filibuster the bill,” Paul told Fox News’ Eric Bolling on the “Hannity” program. “We won’t let them bring it forward, because our fear is that once it comes forward, they’ll come forward with something that sounds benign.”
Earlier this week, Paul and Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Ted Cruz of Texas pledged in a letter to read that they would “oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions.”
Gun Control: Was Harry Reid right to Reject It?
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said on Thursday that he would join the group.
Reid’s bill is expected to propose expanding background checks and penalties on straw purchases of guns.
A portion of the legislation that bans illegal trafficking in firearms has bipartisan support, including from Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, The Hill reports.
Grassley also plans to propose his own gun-control legislation, The Hill reports.
