R&B singer R. Kelly was charged in Minnesota on Monday for an alleged incident involving a minor in 2001 in Minneapolis, the Hennepin County Attorney's office said Monday.
Kelly, 52, whose formal name is Robert Kelly, was charged for allegedly propositioning a minor, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said at a news conference, PioneerPress.com reports.
Freeman said the incident occurred in July 2001, when a juvenile approached Kelly seeking an autograph. They later ended up in a hotel where there was sexual contact, but no intercourse, according to the report.
The juvenile was older than 16 but younger than 18.
Kelly was charged with engaging in, hiring, or agreeing to hire a minor to engage in prostitution, Freeman said.
In New York on Friday, Kelly pleaded not guilty to charges of racketeering and sex trafficking.
The charges allege Kelly ran a criminal scheme by recruiting women and underage girls to have sex with him, isolating them, and often controlling what they ate and when they went to the bathroom.
The singer, known for such hits as "I Believe I Can Fly" and "Bump N' Grind," was arrested in Chicago last month on the Brooklyn charges and a separate set of charges brought by federal prosecutors in Chicago.
He remains in jail in New York after being denied bail twice on the various charges.
