People are destroying their Nike gear to demonstrate against the company’s decision to use controversial former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in its “Just Do It” campaign, The Washington Post is reporting.
It was Kaepernick who inspired a player protest in the NFL by kneeling during the national anthem at the start of NFL games, The New York Times noted.
Kaepernick had plugged the new Nike campaign on Monday by tweeting: “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. #JustDoIt.”
Now, some are posting photos of Nike socks and shoes being destroyed, according to the Post.
Country star John Rich tweeted a photo of a man holding a pair of cut Nike socks.
“Our soundman just cut the Nike swoosh off his socks,” he wrote. “Former marine. Get ready @Nike multiply that by the millions.”
Another person posted a video of his Nike sneakers set on fire. And one posted the Nike logo with the words: “Just Blew It.”
Nike had said on Monday that Kaepernick would be the new face of its “Just Do It” campaign, which is marking its 30th anniversary.
The announcement was met by praise from former CIA Director John Brennan.
“Colin Kaepernick drew our collective attention to the problem of continued racial injustice in America,” he tweeted on Monday. “He did so not to disrespect our flag but to give meaning to the words of the preamble of our Constitution — 'in order to form a more perfect union.’ Well done, Colin, well done.”
