The Trump administration's envoy to Venezuela said Tuesday the administration is considering declaring Temporary Protected Status for migrants who have fled the country.
Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams told members of the press Tuesday that TPS for Venezuelan migrants is "under consideration," but has not been decided on, according to The Hill.
President Donald Trump raised the idea earlier this month, saying the administration is "looking at that very seriously."
TPS is typically granted to people who have fled from their home country due to natural disaster or war. It allows them to live and work in the United States legally until the crisis in their home country is resolved. The House Judiciary Committee approved the Venezuela TPS Act of 2019, which grants protected status to Venezuelans living in the U.S., last month.
The Trump administration previously decided to end protections for migrants from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Sudan. This was put on hold by a federal judge last October, but the administration is appealing the ruling.
About four million Venezuelans have left the country due to hyperinflation and violent political upheaval over the disputed presidency of Nicolás Maduro.
