Pope Toughens Laws on Abusive Priests

Wednesday, 07 July 2010 10:44 AM

Pope Benedict XVI has ramped-up the Vatican laws in order to streamline its handling of sexual-abuse cases by the Church's clerics world-wide, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

• The revisions will double the statute of limitations on accused priests to 20 years from the alleged victim's 18th birthday.

• The changes will strengthen overall legal authority to Vatican officials to prosecute priests accused of abuse.

According to the WSJ report, "The move marks the most concrete measures Pope Benedict has taken to address the crisis that rocked his papacy this year."

The measures were disclosed on the website of the National Catholic Reporter -- ahead of any official Papal announcement, which may come very soon.
