Sixty-one percent of Americans say Obamacare should be kept and fixed, while 37 percent say the healthcare law should be repealed and replaced, an ABC News/Washington Post poll found.

Here are the survey highlights:

  • 56 percent of conservatives favor repeal and replacing Obamacare, compared to 11 percent of liberals and 33 percent of moderates.
  • 79 percent of all those polled say President Donald Trump should try to make the current law work as well as possible while changes are pending, compared to 13 percent who say he should try to make it fail.
  • 70 percent believe coverage for pre-existing conditions should be mandatory nationwide, while 26 percent say it should be left up to the states.

Congress failed to pass a healthcare bill last month, The Washington Post noted. Since then, the White House has been pushing Republicans to unite and vote on a new version of the legislation, the paper said.

"The poll shows that the president's strategy of trying to develop a plan with conservative Republicans contrasts with the public's desire for a bipartisan approach," Amy Goldstein and Scott Clement of The Post wrote.

"A 43 percent plurality of Americans say he should work with Democrats to change the law, while 26 percent would rather Trump work with the conservative Republicans. Another 24 percent volunteer that he should work with both groups."

The poll was conducted April 17-20 among a random national sample of 1,004 adults. Results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
