Opinions about the border wall have never been so sharply divided among partisan lines, with both sides also more adamant not to give in to the other, according to a Pew Research Center survey released on Wednesday.

Although opposition to substantially expanding the border wall has remained fairly constant from a year ago at 58 percent, compared to 40 percent who support the proposal, the two parties have grown even farther apart on the issue.

Over the past year, Republican backing for expanding the border wall has increased from 72 percent to 82 percent, while those Democrats who favor expanding the wall has declined from 13 percent to 6 percent.

Other results from the poll include:

  • Eighty-eight percent of those who oppose expanding the border wall say it would not be acceptable to pass a bill that includes President Donald Trump’s request for wall funding, if that is the only way to end the government shutdown.
  • Among wall supporters, 72 percent say a bill to end the shutdown would be unacceptable if it does not include Trump’s funding request.
  • Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents. 79 percent say the shutdown is a “very serious problem,” while only 35 percent of Republicans say the same.
  • Overall, just 43 percent approve of the way Democratic congressional leaders are handling the shutdown, while 36 percent approve of how Trump and GOP congressional leaders are handling it.

The survey was conducted January 9-14 among 1,505 adults. The overall margin of error was +/- 3 percentage points.
