President Donald Trump's top trade adviser, Peter Navarro, recommended appointing Stefan Halper — identified in two reports as the suspected FBI informant on the Trump campaign — to a senior role in the new Trump administration, Axios reported.
According to the news outlet, Navarro recommended Halper as well as about a dozen others for ambassador roles in Asia during the presidential transition.
A White House official told Axios that Halper visited the Eisenhower Executive Office Building last August for a meeting about China.
Axios, citing an unnamed source, said Halper pitched himself for an ambassadorship in Asia; both Halper and Navarro are experts on China.
The report is the first of Halper making contact with the Trump White House.
Neither the White House nor the FBI have confirmed whether Halper was an informant, but both The Intercept and The Daily Caller have identified the 73-year-old University of Cambridge professor, and longtime CIA operative who worked in three GOP administrations, as such.
In March, The Daily Caller first reported Halper was in close contact and met with Trump campaign advisers Carter Page, Sam Clovis, and George Papadopoulos.
