A new report raised the possibility of Vice President Mike Pence and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley challenging President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published a story Wednesday that discussed the friction that sometimes occurs between Trump and Haley, the former South Carolina governor chosen by Trump to represent the U.S. at the international body.

Republicans with ties to the White House, the Journal-Constitution reported, have discussed the potential for a Pence-Haley run. Pence and Haley aides shot down the idea.

What is likely, however, is that Trump would be none too pleased if two of the closest members of his inner circle abandon him in the coming years and take him on in the Republican primary.

Friction between Trump and Haley and Trump and Pence became clear in recent days.

Sunday afternoon, Haley promised a new set of sanctions on Russia would be announced Monday morning, a message the White House had not delivered to her. The administration was forced to walk back her comments, although she retorted by saying, "With all due respect, I don't get confused."

Trump, according to the report, has also grown frustrated with past comments Haley has made regarding Russia at the UN.

Regarding Trump and Pence, the vice president's choice to serve as his national security adviser withdrew his name from contention after Trump tried to block his nomination.

A separate story Wednesday highlighted Pence's loyalty to Trump, noting that he rarely, if ever, challenges him. Pence's humble personality is another thing that Trump likes.

Trump has already committed to running for a second term in 2020.
