GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch on Thursday bashed Obamacare supporters as the "stupidest, dumbass people I've ever met."
In a speech to the American Enterprise Institute in Salt Lake City, the retiring Utah veteran talked about Congress doing away with the individual mandate in what he sarcastically called that "wonderful" bill — pointing out he was being "sarcastic."
"That was the stupidest, dumbass bill that I've ever seen," Hatch declared about the Affordable Care Act.
"Now some of you may have loved it. If you do, you are one of the stupidest, dumbass people I've ever met," he said to some awkward laughs.
"And there are a lot of them up on Capitol Hill from time to time."
The remarks start at the 18:50-minute mark on video that was posted on YouTube.
In a statement to the Deseret News, Hatch spokesman Matt Whitlock said "the comments were obviously made in jest, but what's not a joke is the harm Obamacare has caused for countless Utahns."
Hatch lashed out at the law requiring most people to buy health insurance coverage or pay a penalty is one of the most regressive taxes in the tax code "with lower-income families paying most of the freight," which he noted was one of the "great ironies" of Obamacare.
