O'Reilly to Media: 'Stay in Fact Zone' on IRS Scandal

By    |   Tuesday, 14 May 2013 04:58 PM EDT

Linking the current IRS scandal directly to President Barack Obama at this point would be a "gross speculation," Bill O'Reilly said Tuesday morning on Fox.

The political commentator and television host weighed in on the scandal rocking the White House, as well as Benghazi and the government allegedly tracking the phone records of reporters and editors at the Associated Press.

Talking with Fox's Martha MacCallum, O'Reilly said that Americans should wait for an investigation before deciding how high up the ranks the IRS scandal goes. The service allegedly unfairly targeted conservative and pro-Israel groups applying for nonprofit status. Some have been waiting for years to be approved.

"Holder has to come out and say, 'we did X and this is why we did it.' Is he going to do it? Probably not. Then you can start to hammer him," he said.

He also said that conservative commentators rushing to conclusions about Obama ordering extra scrutiny on the groups only gives the president "cover," and recommended  commentators "stay in the fact zone."

The Benghazi scandal, now eight months since U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed at an embassy in Libya, has been covered up because the administration didn't want to hurt Obama's re-election, O'Reilly added.

"They didn't want to admit they had poor security and they didn't want to admit they had a full-blown terrorism attack," he said. "You screwed it up, OK? Just say it. Say it."

As for the AP's supposed tapping, O'Reilly was skeptical to call it a scandal until all the facts are out, even suggesting that the Department of Justice may have had good reason for it.

"Let's just wait and see what this is," he said.
