The White House on Thursday began a new web page devoted to making President Barack Obama's case for limited military strikes against Syrian President Bashar Assad as punishment for using chemical weapons on his own people last month.
The page, entitled "Chemical Weapons Attack in Syria," begins with an excerpt from Obama's Sept. 1 speech in which he called for the limited strikes. The page, which also includes a map of the country, is part of the
Whitehouse.gov website.

"Our intelligence shows the Assad regime and its forces preparing to use chemical weapons, launching rockets in the highly populated suburbs of Damascus, and acknowledging that a chemical weapons attack took place," Obama says in the excerpt. "And all of this corroborates what the world can plainly see: hospitals overflowing with victims; terrible images of the dead.
"All told, well over 1,000 people were murdered," the excerpt continues. "Several hundred of them were children — young girls and boys gassed to death by their own government."
The page also summarizes events in Obama's effort to sway Congress on the issue — his meetings with Capitol Hill leaders, for instance — and provides links to blogs, news releases, and videos.
Also on the page is a link to the declassified report on Assad's use of chemical weapons in the Aug. 21 attack that the White House said killed 1,429 people, including as many as 426 children, in the rebel-held suburbs of Damascus.
