Obama Apologizes to California AG for ‘Best Looking’ Remark

By    |   Friday, 05 April 2013 03:39 PM EDT

President Barack Obama apologized Friday to California Attorney General Kamala Harris for calling her “the best-looking attorney general in the country.”

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama called Harris following the event “to apologize for the distraction created by his comments.”

“They are old friends, good friends, and he did not want in any way to diminish the attorney general’s professional accomplishments and her capabilities,” Carney said.

A spokesman for Harris told Fox News that she and the president “had a great conversation and she strongly supports him.”

The remark that landed Obama in hot water came at a Democratic fundraiser in Atherton, Calif., where Obama offered his unusual praise.

“You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake,” Obama said.

However, he went on to add: “She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country.”
