The plan by Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee to move forward with setting the rules on impeachment later this week are an "absurdity," but probably a "necessary" one for the party, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.
"Nobody believes the Republican Senate will convict the president," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "It makes no sense at all. On the other hand it drains energy away from trying to find solutions, although frankly if you look at what their presidential candidates are saying, impeachment may be less destructive for them than talking about the stupid ideas their presidential candidates are running on."
The discussion also reflects the fact that "so much of American politics now is just pure baloney," said Gingrich. "It has no substantive meaning. It will go nowhere."
However, the Democratic party's left-wing members would "go crazy' if the vote wasn't held, said Gingrich. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a "real balancing act" when it comes to her party, as all of its energy is focused on the "nutcake left," and if she does not appease them, "her life will be totally miserable," Gingrich added.
Further, the left side of the party has to keep the impeachment issue alive as they are "people who wake up every morning hating Donald Trump, and then he tweets two or three things and they're reminded why they hate him," said Gingrich.
Gingrich on Tuesday also discussed North Carolina's special election, calling it a "litmus test" for the 2020 election, considering Trump won the district under contention.
"When I was speaker, I took every single special election as a really big deal," said Gingrich.
