"She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in explaining why he silenced Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren on the floor of the Senate Tuesday. Now, the phrase is becoming a rallying cry for women and liberals.
During a discussion on the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions as President Donald Trump's attorney general, Warren was attempting to read 30-year-old letter by Coretta Scott King that opposed the candidacy of Sessions for a federal judgeship. Warren was formally silenced and no longer allowed to speak on the topic of Sessions.
But McConnell's explanation quickly backfired as many women and liberals — including Hillary Clinton — took the opportunity to point out women in history who fought to beat the odds, and hashtags such as #LetLizSpeak and #ShePersisted gained traction on Twitter.
