Navarro: Airbus Ruling Won't Kick Off 'Tit-for-Tat' Trade War

The World Trade Organization's judgment in favor of the United States won't kick off a "tit-for-tat" trade war with Europe, White House Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Peter Navarro said Thursday. 

“This was a case that was filed with the World Trade Organization," Navarro told Fox Business’ “Mornings with Maria.” "It went through 15 years, and there was a judgment. Under the rules of the WTO, the judgment will be enforced, and there can be no retaliation.”

Wednesday, the WTO ruled in favor of the United States imposing tariffs on $7.5 billion in goods from the European Union, after Airbus had obtained illegal subsidies for more than 10 years, marking the biggest reward in WTO history 

The tariffs will go into effect on Oct. 18 and are expected to bring in 10% for large commercial aircraft and another 25% for industrial and agricultural goods, including European cheese, whiskey, olives, and more.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malstrom said European countries will have "no option" but to levy tariffs on the United States if it imposes the WTO-approved measures, but Navarro said the decision is one that Americans should celebrate. 

“This is the kind of day where President Trump and Ambassador (Robert) Lightheizer should be getting high fives and salutes," he told show host Maria Bartiromo. "They did a great job.”
