Newt on Munich Shootings: 'Sad and Tragic'

Republicans expressed their grief Friday on the Munich shootings, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich recalling a visit there last month with his wife, Callista.

Here's what the former Georgia congressman said on Twitter:

He also slammed President Barack Obama for his positive outlook at a White House news conference as he refuted Donald Trump's "vision of violence and chaos everywhere" in his Thursday speech at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland:

At the press session, a smiling Obama said: "I mean, I hope people, the next morning, walked outside and birds were chirping and the sun was out, and this afternoon people will be watching their kids play in sports teams and go to the swimming pool, and folks are going to work and getting ready for the weekend."

The president said later: "We don't yet know exactly what's happening there, but obviously our hearts go out to those who may have been injured."

In addition, Gingrich ripped the press on Trump's speech, in light of Friday's attacks:

At least nine people were dead and several others wounded in shootings at the Olympia Einkaufszentrum shopping center in Munich, police said. One of the dead might include a possible shooter, authorities said, and police are seeking three attackers.

Munich's metro transportation system has been shut down in the manhunt.

The shopping area is near Munich's Olympic Stadium, built for the 1972 Games — the Olympics were marred by a terror attack that resulted in the death of 11 Israeli athletes by a Palestinian group.

"At the moment no culprit has been arrested," Munich police said on social media. "The search is taking place at high speed."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the attacks marked "a heartbreaking time for the people of Germany.

"But America stands with our ally in the face of this attack, just as we will stand with them in the coming days as they grieve and recover from these senseless acts," the Kentucky senator said.
