In Minnesota, Little Urgency to End Shutdown

Saturday, 09 July 2011 01:49 PM EDT

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota's state government shutdown has deepened the political paralysis that led the state's elected leaders into their budget standoff.

There's little sense of urgency, even with state employees laid off, road projects stopped, state parks barricaded and the state's credit rating tarnished.

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican legislative leaders have met just twice to try to reach a breakthrough since most of state government closed on July 1. One of their meetings lasted less than 30 minutes.

The lack of action contrasts with the situation in Washington, where a deadline to raise the debt ceiling has lawmakers scrambling for a deal.

More than a week into the nation's longest state government shutdown in a decade, there are no obvious deadlines to prompt a resolution.
