President Donald Trump said Tuesday he does not want to reintroduce family separations at the border, but Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., said the practice might have to happen if Democrats will not work with Republicans to make sure there are resources in place to keep the families together.

"Unfortunately we can't get the Democrats to work with us on making sure we can provide those resources to CBP (Customs and Border Patrol) so they could put that infrastructure in place, the medical personnel in place, so that we have capacity for these folks," Rep. Rogers told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime."

"Otherwise we are going to have to separate them, and that's just not what we want to do."

Rogers, the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, said, while Trump has said he wants a tougher stance overall with border security, he can keep moving forward by putting up barriers and trying to shift military personnel to work the border.

"One of the things that people don't understand about the military going to the border is the role they provide," Rogers said. "We are talking about now, starting to hire people who are not necessarily Border Patrol agents, (who are) highly trained to do some of the intake processing of detainees on the computers so we can get those agents out from behind those computers and out on the border."
