Mike Bloomberg's aides have been urging him to drop out of the Democratic race for president and endorse Joe Biden before Super Tuesday's vote ever since Biden's strong showing in Saturday's South Carolina primary, but he has steadfastly refused, according to reporting by Gabriel Sherman at Vanity Fair.
The view among many in Bloomberg's own camp is Biden has the best chance to beat President Donald Trump, but Bloomberg's presence in the race is drawing support from Biden and will only ensure the nomination of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
"There is a prevailing view Mike should drop out," one adviser told Vanity Fair, and campaign officials are frustrated he is not taking their advice.
"The dynamic of the race clearly changed," another adviser said.
"Mike is a data guy, and he's looking at the numbers thinking, I'll be damned if I walk away before a single vote is cast for me," one source told Vanity Fair.
Bloomberg opted to skip the first four states to focus instead on the delegate-rich Super Tuesday states. The billionaire businessman is self-funding his campaign.
His original argument for entering the race was what he saw as Biden's weak chances of winning the nomination. But with Biden's revived vigor, Bloomberg's staff, fears he might now be playing a spoiler in the vein of Ross Perot or Ralph Nader.
Many within the party are fearful Sanders, a self-proclaimed Democratic socialist who is not a member of the party except when he runs in presidential elections, will lose to Trump. Several polls have shown general election voters saying they will not cast a ballot for a socialist.
Trump, in tweets and statements, has hinted he would prefer to run against Sanders.
Bloomberg aides say he might consider dropping out if he performs badly on Super Tuesday.
"He's not going to stay in and say, 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,'" one Vanity Fair source said.
