The publisher of "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House," Michael Wolff's scathing book on President Donald Trump, has ordered 1.4 million copies and will debut Jan. 21 as No. 1 on two bestseller lists of The New York Times.
"The book is already in its eleventh printing in less than one week of publication, with more printings scheduled," publisher Henry Holt said in a statement. "A significant number of books will be arriving in stores by the end of the week.
"The company has 1.4 million hardcover books on order and will have shipped more than 700,000 copies to date."
Holt said the book's No. 1 ranking on the Times hardcover nonfiction list is based on "only two days of sales since its release on Jan. 5."
The book also will top the Times' combined print and e-book list, the publisher said.
The release date was moved up from its originally scheduled release on Jan. 9.
"Fire and Fury" contains unflattering remarks by former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon, who slams the president and his eldest son, Donald Jr., among other family members.
The fallout led to Bannon, whom President Trump fired last August, resigning last week as executive chairman of Breitbart News — reportedly under pressure from his financial patron, Rebekah Mercer.
President Trump's private attorney, Charles Harder, also sent Macmillan a cease-and-desist order to stop the book's publication, which was rejected.
Don Weisberg, president of Macmillan Publishers, which owns Henry Holt, said in the statement that "the magnitude of demand for 'Fire and Fury' was so unprecedented that we felt the only thing to do was break from our planned publication date, which Macmillan has never done in our memory, and make this book available as soon as possible to accounts and readers."
