Former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton could mount a “comeback” as the party searches for a candidate who can take down President Donald Trump, New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin wrote on Monday.
Goodwin notes former Vice President Joe Biden’s status as “the clear front-runner” over “the dreaded” Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., but says that “instead of a smooth ride, it’s more likely that the Dems’ desperate search for a Trump slayer will hit more turbulence and an alternative to Biden still could be necessary.”
He adds that a resurgence for Clinton would fit right in with the “too-weird twists and turns of Biden’s campaign,” such as his comeback after poor showings in the Iowa and New Hampshire. Goodwin writes that Biden’s “revival can’t erase the memory of the sad failure he was just two weeks ago, nor are the cognitive issues suddenly resolved by a winning streak,” and that if Biden doesn’t win the nomination, “Sanders would get the crown, and I don’t believe Dem leaders will let that happen.”
Goodwin writes that without Biden the party lacks a strong moderate candidate, “which leaves Clinton as the best backup plan." He notes that the recent documentary about her on Hulu “is a massive and slick selling job,” that “tries to inject dashes of glamour and cultural gravitas about feminism into what is essentially a loser’s story.”
He adds, “While it’s impossible to miss the rollout and her glee in using the film and interviews to stick knives into Trump and Sanders, it’s also impossible to miss the timing. All the party has to do is call. Her bag is packed.”
