CENTCOM Commander Gen. Kenneth McKenzie said the U.S. believes it may have downed two Iranian drones last week rather than just the one drone that previously was reported, CBS News is reporting.’
McKenzie told the network news he believed the USS Boxer, successfully engaged two drones.
"As always it was a complex tactical picture, we believe two drones. We believe two drones were successfully — there may have been more that we are not aware of — those are the two that we engaged successfully," McKenzie said..
"We are confident we brought down one drone, we may have brought down a second."
CBS News reported the incidents took place as the Boxer made its nine-hour passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The first drone was seen approaching too close to the ship. After taking unspecified action, the first drone disappeared from U.S. radars, CBS News reported. And there was a visual sighting of the second drone going into the water.
Iran has denied losing any of its unmanned aircraft over the Gulf. But President Donald Trump last week said he is confident U.S. forces shot down an Iranian drone.
Until now, there had been no mention of another drone being brought down.
