Matt Lauer Extends 'Today' Contract for $20M a Year

"Today" show anchor Matt Lauer re-signed his contract with NBC for $20 million a year, according to Page Six.

The deal will keep Lauer as co-host of the show "well into 2018," one source told Page Six, while another source said his deal could be longer.

Earlier this year, reports had stirred that Lauer would leave the morning show after the election. However, Page Six notes that similar rumors appeared in 2014 before he signed his contract then.

Lauer first joined "Today" in 1994 as news anchor, and became co-anchor in 1997.

In September, Lauer received criticism for his hosting duties at the Commander-in-Chief Forum between then-presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, with one NBC executive calling it a "disaster."

According to Page Six, Noah Oppenheim, the executive in charge at "Today," is also in a contract-signing period. His contract expires in early 2017. Oppenheim is the screenwriter for "Jackie," a movie about Jacqueline Kennedy starring actress Natalie Portman.

Billy Bush was co-anchor of the show until October, when he was released after a 2005 video surfaced of him with Donald Trump making lewd comments about women.
