NASA announced a landing spot for its 2020 rover on Monday, an area called the Jezero Crater, according to an announcement from NASA.
“The landing site in Jezero Crater offers geologically rich terrain, with landforms reaching as far back as 3.6 billion years old, that could potentially answer important questions in planetary evolution and astrobiology,” said NASA's Thomas Zurbuchen. “Getting samples from this unique area will revolutionize how we think about Mars and its ability to harbor life.”
The location has in the past been considered too tough a challenge, but researchers hope to find evidence of "ancient habitable conditions – and past microbial life," according to NASA.
Samples also will be taken to return to Earth.
