Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is proposing a constitutional amendment to keep the number of justices on the Supreme Court to nine.
Rubio, in a column for Fox News, said his proposal is aimed at blocking “the packing of the Supreme Court for partisan gains.” Some Democrat presidential hopefuls have floated the possibility of increasing the number of justices n the high court.
"To prevent the delegitimizing of the Supreme Court, I will introduce a constitutional amendment to keep the number of seats at nine,” Rubio said. “There is nothing magical about the number nine. It is not inherently right just because the number of seats on the Supreme Court remains unchanged since 1869. But there is something inherently good and important about preventing the further destabilization of essential institutions.”
Rubio maintained American “institutions are suffering a crisis of confidence”
He added: “And most Americans view every branch of government with disdain. As we have seen, these problems do not necessarily fade from one election to the next. In fact, they may intensify. The path forward will require Americans, their political leaders, the news media and countless others to set aside the political tribalism that dominates today’s culture.
“Americans need to view one another as friends, neighbors and coworkers – not Republicans or Democrats.”
