Man Attempts to Open Door on Flight from Alaska to Portland

By    |   Monday, 27 May 2013 06:22 PM EDT

A 23-year-old man on a commercial flight from Anchorage, Alaska to Portland, Oregon was arrested after he tried to open an emergency exit door during the plane's descent.

Passengers and crew aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 132 told investigators that Alexander Michael Herrera made "unusual statements" before trying to open the door on Monday, said FBI Spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele.
Herrera, an Arizona resident, set off an alarm after he pulled the door handle in the emergency-exit row, she said.

Fellow passenger Henry Pignataro told local station KGW-TV that after a woman sitting next to the suspect asked for help, "I put him in a choke hold and brought him down to the ground."

Pignataro said he and another man held Herrera down and then used three sets of shoelaces brought by flight attendants to bind his legs before applying extra seatbelt extensions as well.

After being put into a seat, Herrera sat calmly, "surrounded by guys," until the plane landed nine minutes behind schedule, Pignataro told KGW.
Herrara, who was reportedly listed as weighting 220 pounds in his booking information, was booked into a Portland jail on a charge of interfering with a flight crew and is expected to appear in court before a federal magistrate on Tuesday.
