Top Members of International Hacking Group LulzSec Arrested

Tuesday, 06 March 2012 09:42 AM EST

Top members of the computer hacking group LulzSec have been arrested in an international case spanning the United States, Great Britain, and Ireland. The arrests were based on evidence that the group’s leader provided to investigators, Fox News reported.

Conspiracy charges against four of the five members named were filed in New York federal court. The suspects include two men from Great Britain, two from Ireland, and an American in Chicago, Fox reported.

The group, a spinoff of Anonymous, allegedly was led by Hector Xavier Monsegur, who goes by the alias “Sabu.” He operated out of a public housing project on New York’s Lower East Side but began working with the FBI in June, according to Fox.

“They caught him, and he was secretly arrested and now works for the FBI,” a source close to Sabu told FoxNews.com. The five charged in the LulzSec conspiracy indictment expected to be unsealed Tuesday are Ryan Ackroyd, known as “Kayla,” and Jake Davis, “Topiary,” both of London; Darren Martyn, “pwnsauce” and Donncha O’Cearrbhail, “palladium,” both of Ireland; and Jeremy Hammond, “Anarchaos,” of Chicago, Fox reported.

LulzSec has wreaked havoc on various government agencies around the globe, including the CIA and FBI, defense contractors, financial and governmental entities and corporations, according to Fox.
