When residents of eastern Libya declared "semi-autonomy" earlier this month, it appeared the oil-rich country once held together by the brute force of Muammar Gaddafi was breaking apart at the seams. It might be, but Libya could also be taking the same long road to unity under a single central government that the young United States took before electing George Washington its first president.
