"Last Man Standing," the Tim Allen comedy that was canceled by ABC last month, will not be revived by CMT after talks with the show's producers at 20th Century Fox Television broke down over cost, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
CMT was already broadcasting "Last Man Standing" in syndication and had revived the ABC music drama "Nashville" last year, noted the celebrity publication. Money, though, was the hang up of bringing another show to Viacom-owned CMT.
"Insiders cautioned at the time that a deal was a long shot given the price tag on the veteran multi-camera comedy," said THR’s Lesley Goldberg. "That turned out to be true as there will not be a deal between CMT and 20th TV for 'Last Man Standing' and the series remains canceled. Producers 20th TV had already placed calls to writers about a potential revival and the cast remains under contract through the end of June."
Deadline.com said CMT's deal to revive "Nashville" came with assistance from video-on-demand service Hulu, which shared the cost of production in exchange for next-day streaming rights.
"Nashville," which just completed its fifth season, its first on CMT, was just renewed as a 16-episode sixth season that will premiere in early 2018.
"The cancellation of 'Last Man Standing' by ABC after six seasons became a rallying cry for conservatives, with a petition launched that calls for ABC to bring back the series and for a boycott of the network if it doesn't," said Deadline.com's Nellie Andreeva.
"The petition, which refers to 'Last Man Standing' as a show that appeals to a broad swath of Americans who find very few shows that extol the virtues with which they can identify — namely conservative values — quickly reached its goal of 150,000 signatures," Andreeva continued.
The show's star expressed shocked about the cancellation last month on social media.
ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey claimed Allen’s support of President Donald Trump did not factor into her decision to cancel the series, stating that ABC canceled numerous studio series at the same time, said THR.
