President Donald Trump during his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un earlier this year promised he would sign a declaration ending the Korean War shortly after the meeting, but has not done so, likely stalling peace talks, according to a source who spoke with Vox.
"It makes sense why the North Koreans are angry," the source told Vox. "Having Trump promise a peace declaration and then moving the goalposts and making it conditional would be seen as the U.S. reneging on its commitments."
Trump last week acknowledged the talks with North Korea were not going according to plan, and canceled a trip to Pyongyang by Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, a move followed by North Korean state media accusing the U.S. of "double-dealing attitudes" and returning to "gunboat diplomacy."
"The U.S. would be sadly mistaken if it thinks that it can browbeat someone through trite 'gunboat diplomacy' which it used to employ as an almighty weapon in the past and attain its sinister intention," a statement on North Korea's Rodong Sinmun read.
Since Trump's sit-down with Kim, Pompeo has pushed for North Korea to hand over 60 to 70 percent of its nuclear warheads within six to eight months. Kim has been angered by the pressure, according to Vox.
