Rep. Darrell Issa said Tuesday that swift enforcement of U.N. sanctions against North Korea will force dictator Kim Jong Un to choose whether to feed his people or back his nuclear ambitions.
"We are on the path toward cutting off all funds," the California Republican told Jake Tapper on CNN.
"If we cut off all currency, hard currency, to this regime, this regime is going to have to choose: nuclear weapons or an internal problem that this dictator probably cannot deal with."
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that further threats against the U.S. from Pyongyang would be "met with fire and fury like the world has never seen."
The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Saturday to impose sanctions targeting as much as $1 billion in North Korean exports.
"Cutting nearly half-a-billion dollars in money to this regime cuts off the capability of this dictator, Kim Jong Un, to fund his regime," Issa told Tapper.
"He's not the general in charge.
"People don't follow him because they're loyal. He doles out very limited money to his generals.
"The last dollar doesn't go to the people," he said. "It goes to the generals and the weapons program."
