Kim Jon Un reportedly had an army lieutenant general executed for saying in the run-up to the Singapore summit that there was no longer a need to make sacrifices for the country’s weapons program and then ladling out some post-nuke gravy to his troops and their families.
The North Korean leader was said to be appalled when he learned that 55-year-old Hyon Ju Sog of the Korean People’s Army had been handing out extra rice and corn rations to his colleagues at the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, The International Business Times reported.
Hyon was charged with abusing authority and in engaging in anti-Party acts. He was publicly executed in April at the firing range of the Kang Kon Military Academy in North Korea's capital of Pyongyang, The Daily NK reported, citing sources.
One anonymous source explained that Hyon was checking oil supplies for the station during an inspection when he stated, "we no longer have to suffer and tighten our belts to make rockets or nuclear weapons," which was deemed as an abuse of authority and a treasonous statement that opposed the Party’s military-first policy.
"He gave instructions to send out one ton of fuel, 580 kg of rice, and 750 kg of corn to military officers at the Launching Station and their families. This was considered an anti-Party act violating the Ten Principles for the Establishment of the Party’s One Ideology System," the source added.
A separate source noted that Kim was furious when he heard of the incident and was heard saying that "the ideological poisoning that is personal idolization is corrupting the chief personnel in the People’s Army," adding "we must nip the bud of ideological poisoning," according to The Daily NK.
Last December, reports emerged that Kim's top aide may have been executed by a North Korean death squad after being accused of bribery.
Several months prior it was alleged that North Korea executed five senior security officials with anti-aircraft guns because they made false reports that "enraged" Kim.
In 2016, the north Korean leader reportedly executed the country's vice premier for education in what appeared to be an effort to discipline top aides and in 2014 allegations surfaced that Kim executed his uncle as well as all his living blood relatives, including children and grandchildren.
