House Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., will host Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in Los Angeles on Wednesday, his office announced Monday.
In a statement, the top Republican's office said the meeting would be bipartisan and take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, Politico reported.
But the meeting had already triggered threats last week from China, which vowed "resolute countermeasures" in the aftermath.
Tsai has framed her tour of the island's diplomatic allies in the Americas as a chance to demonstrate Taiwan's commitment to democratic values on the world stage. Her first stop was New York last Wednesday, before she headed to Guatemala and Belize.
The Los Angeles stop will be on her way back to Taiwan.
Beijing was furious at the itinerary.
Last Wednesday, a spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, Zhu Fenglian, denounced the stopovers and demanded no U.S. officials meet with her.
"We firmly oppose this and will take resolute countermeasures," Zhu said at the time, adding the United States should "refrain from arranging Tsai Ing-wen's transit visits and even contact with American officials and take concrete actions to fulfill its solemn commitment not to support Taiwan independence."
