Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian activities and President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign will continue after Jeff Sessions' ouster as attorney general, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Thursday.
"This is a continuum," Conway told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "The Mueller investigation will continue."
She also said she thinks it is "very commendable and noble" that Trump named Sessions' chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, as acting attorney general until a permanent replacement can be named, and that he is keeping Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in his position."
"I think it is very commendable and notable that the president is augering for a continuum" by appointing chief of staff Matt Whitaker, Conway told Fox News' "America's Newsroom," noting that the now-acting AG has been in his job for more than a year.
She said that while Trump asked Sessions for his resignation on Wednesday, the matter was a "long time coming."
"It has been a fraught relationship that you have covered for many months, if not the better part of a year-and-a-half, and it has been a long time coming," said Conway. "But many people, including the president yesterday, commended General Sessions for his years of service. He's been a public servant for 40 years in Alabama, and as attorney general."
Meanwhile, she cited ABC polling that came on Wednesday, noting that 42 percent of those polled say they approve of Mueller's investigation; 46 disapprove, and 41 percent said the matter was justified.
Another 54 percent said they think the investigation is politically motivated, Conway said.
