Presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway blasted calls for her to be fired over repeated violations of the federal Hatch Act and accused Democrats of wanting to "put a big roll of masking tape over my mouth" for helping President Donald Trump to win the 2016 election.
"You know what they're mad about?" Conway said on Fox News "Fox and Friends." "I helped in many ways for the president, our vice president, our two greatest assets. They won the election over the other two. I helped by being on television, being on the radio."
The House Oversight and Reform Committee on Sunday said it will vote to subpoena Conway if she doesn't appear Wednesday for its hearings on the allegations against her. Last week, the Office of Special Counsel recommended she be fired over Hatch Act violations. The law prevents all in the executive branch but the president and vice president from acting politically while acting in their official capacities, and accused Conway of repeated violations because of her criticisms of Democratic presidential candidates.
"It's not even clear to us here at the White House, according to the council, that the Hatch Act applies to assistants to the president," Conway said. "We think I would be the first member of the West Wing to be hauled in front of Congress to talk about the Hatch Act."
Conway said the White House counsel's office issued an 11-page letter on the issue, and she'll be posting it on Twitter.
"Everybody should read the letter," said Conway. "The White House counsel's office makes clear what is and isn't afoot here."
