Democrats will "certainly own" another government shutdown if an agreement isn't reached on border security, and the party already has had a "horrible six weeks" in 2019, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Monday.
However, many "prominent and big-mouth Democrats" are calling for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be abolished, Conway told Fox News' "Fox and Friends," and that would be "devastating" to efforts to keep Americans safe.
"The president is not part of these negotiations," said Conway, while responding to reports that the budget talks are at a standstill over arguments over cutting funds for ICE detention beds. "He is waiting for a bill to come to his desk he can sign into law...People should know, especially the people who went to the border complained there were not enough beds, we want more beds, they want fewer. They want people to come illegally into the United States of America."
But Democrats are the "ones hurtling us toward a shutdown," Conway maintained, at a time when the party is having a tough time, pointing to scandals in Virginia's top leadership and tweets made by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., "again, anti-Semitic sewage spilling from her mouth overnight."
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is not concerned about the size of the crowd for his appearance Monday in El Paso, Texas, even with Democrat Beto O'Rourke holding a rival rally, said Conway, and the widening Democratic slate for 2020 is not a concern.
"Keep it coming," said Conway. "Just remember, anything times zero still equals zero."
