Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was denied a motion Thursday to have a defamation case against him thrown out over his comments about the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting massacre.
According to HuffPost, Judge Scott Jenkins in Austin's 53rd District Court ruled the defamation lawsuit filed by several families of the victims — which is seeking more than $1 million — can continue.
"After considering the arguments of counsel and the record, including plaintiffs' declarations filed on August 2, the court ORDERS that defendants' motion is in all respects DENIED," the court filing reads.
Jones has said several times over the years the Sandy Hook shooting was not real and it was a made-up event to advance the gun control agenda. Leonard Pozner and Veronique De La Rosa are among the families suing Jones for that claim, saying they have faced threats and harassment online from Jones' followers.
Jones was trying to get the case dismissed, saying his First Amendment rights allowed him to make the accusations.
The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, took place Dec. 14, 2012 and involved a 20-year-old shooter, who killed himself as police closed in after he shot and killed six adults and 20 children.
