Former Vice President Joe Biden says today's tumultuous political climate in Washington and around the world makes it "one of the most dangerous times in modern history."
The remarks came at a Miami event Saturday amid Biden's book tour for his memoir about his eldest son Beau’s illness and death, "Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose," the Miami Herald reported.
"I think it's one of the most dangerous times in modern history," Biden told the sold-out crowd, the Herald reported, calling former White House strategist Stephen Bannon as one of the proponents of "half-baked nationalism" and "phony populism," and extolling "the power of example."
"I think that there have always been voices in our country — and particularly in the 19th and 20th century in Europe — that have always tried to take advantage of pain and change," Biden said.
He also lashed out at Democratic Party "elites" for not paying better attention to the working class — and questioned President Donald Trump's commitment to those same voters now that he is in the White House.
"The reason why we've been so socially and politically stable is because of an aspirational class," Biden said, the Herald reported. "Some of the elites in my party deserve some of the blame."
"Do you think he really cares about the kids I grew up with in Scranton, Pennsylvania, as far as their economic well being?" Biden asked about Trump.
Though Biden did not say if he would mount a presidential bid in 2020, he ended his political remarks on an upbeat note.
"The world is ours. The rest of the world is looking to us," Biden said.
