President Donald Trump is no isolationist and he should continue to maintain America's alliances, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said.
Hunt spoke with Politico on Thursday while he visits Washington, D.C., during which he is scheduled to meet with Vice President Mike Pence and other Trump administration officials.
"America has a lot of friends all over the world that share American values," Hunt said.
Trump "should always think that there is opportunity in building alliances with America's friends across the world, because we are, like he is, committed to open societies, rule of law, free trade, the values that have created the most successful international order since, in the history of humanity."
Regarding the isolationist label some have painted on Trump because of his America First approach to governing, Hunt does not view the president that way.
"In all my interactions with him I've found someone who is very keen to do things with his allies," Hunt said. "I don't think this is an isolationist president. He wants America to have a huge presence in every corner of the globe."
The U.S. and the United Kingdom forged a tight relationship during World War II and have been top allies ever since. Hunt said that alliance will continue to be "central to U.K. foreign policy" moving forward.
Trump has ruffled some feathers within the U.K. He reportedly berated British Prime Minister Theresa May during a phone call on Air Force One in November. The following month, British defense minister Tobias Ellwood was critical of Trump's decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria.
