Billionaire entrepreneur Jeff Bezos is bullish on building a settlement on the moon and moving millions of people into space, saying that "we will have to leave this planet," Geekwire reported.
The Amazon and Blue Origin space venture founder made the remarks late last week at the International Space Development Conference.
"We will have to leave this planet," Bezos told the gathering. "We're going to leave it, and it's going to make this planet better. We'll come and go, and the people who want to stay will stay.
"The Earth is not a very good place to do heavy industry. It's convenient for us right now," Geekwire quoted Bezos. "But in the not-too-distant future — I'm talking decades, maybe 100 years — it'll start to be easier to do a lot of the things that we currently do on Earth in space, because we'll have so much energy."
And while Bezos hopes to strike a partnership with NASA or the European Space Agency, he's committed to going it alone. Blue Origin can have a lunar lander ready to fly five tons of payload to the moon by the mid 2020s, Geekwire reported.
"By the way, we will do that, even if NASA doesn't do it," Bezos said. "We'll do it eventually. We could do it a lot faster through a partnership. … I hope we don't need to do any of it. I want other people to do it. But if need be, we'll do it."
