Vice President Mike Pence sent a tweet thanking James Shaw Jr., who was credited for saving lives after he took away a weapon from a shooter at a Waffle House in Tennessee.
"Thanks, James Shaw Jr. for your courageous actions to save lives and your continued efforts to help others. You’re an American hero," Pence said in the tweet.
The shooter killed four people in a Nashville Waffle House Sunday and was captured Monday.
Shaw burned his hand grabbing the hot muzzle of the assault weapon as he took the gun away from the shooter. Shaw said he made up his mind that the shooter "was going to have to work to kill me," The Associated Press reported.
The Waffle House reopened on Wednesday, three days after the shootings.
