Activist Dressed as Osama bin Laden Crosses Rio Grande Unimpeded

Conservative activist James O'Keefe has exposed vulnerabilities along the Mexico-Texas border, by crossing a narrow section of the knee-deep Rio Grande River, dressed as Osama bin Laden.

O'Keefe waded across the border from Mexico into the United States wearing a camouflage military jacket and a mask of Osama bin Laden wearing a white turban, with no U.S. Border Patrol agents in sight.

Story continues below video.

O'Keefe, 30, who first gained fame in 2009 for dressing as a pimp attempting to set up brothels in the United States and receiving assistance and advice from representatives of ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, waded across 15 to 20 feet of the river to demonstrate how easy it is for illegal immigrants, or even Muslim terrorists, to enter the country.

In his Project Veritas video, O'Keefe says, "What we discovered should worry every American. It's obvious that no one is on watch. Even Osama bin Laden could cross."

He was accompanied by Hudspeth County, Texas, Sheriff Arvin West, who showed O'Keefe a place next to the high security wall separating the two countries, where only four strands of barbed wire formed an easily passable entry point into the United States. The site is about 30 miles east of El Paso, and Hudspeth County shares 98 miles of border with Mexico.

Asked, "Do you think our border is secure?" West responded, "You're looking at it. If you think four strands of barbed wire are securing the border, then I guess it's secure."

O'Keefe had no problem pulling aside a stake, like a gate, crossing the "barrier" and wading the river, back and forth, on well-worn footpaths. He even hiked six miles to Interstate 10 without being challenged, saying, "From here, I could get anywhere in the U.S. I'm here today to ask you, do you feel safe?"

O'Keefe, on the Mexican side before wading into the river, said, "Thousands of people have stood in my footsteps right now. They've come from South America, Honduras, Guatemala, and they've all crossed the border. And if they can cross, anybody can cross."

Amid videos of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and President Barack Obama all declaring that the border is secure, O'Keefe noted, "I don't see a single federal officer anywhere, no walls, no guns. If the president or Sen. Reid or anyone else tries to tell you our border is secure, they are lying."

Near the place where O'Keefe waded across the river, there is an old steel footbridge taking a drier path across the shallow stretch of river, again with no U.S. Border Patrol agents visible in any direction.

Asked whether the president knows about the lax security, West said, "Washington paints the picture of how secure it is. The question is, it doesn't matter if he knows or not, but does he care? That's the question."

West told O'Keefe, "You hear the rumors of boots on the ground and more agents. We've got plenty of agents. They just need to be on the border."
