Federal investigators are probing whether former FBI general counsel James Baker leaked information to the media, two Republican members of Congress revealed on Tuesday, Fox News reports.

Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Mark Meadows, R-N.C., wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John Durham, in which they quote Baker’s lawyer, Daniel Levin, who told members of Congress in an interview that his client has “been the subject of a leak investigation. . . a criminal leak investigation that’s still active at the Justice Department.”

"As we continue our oversight and investigative work, we felt it prudent to write to you seeking an update. Without being apprised of the contours of your leak investigation and Baker’s role, we run the risk of inadvertently interfering with your prosecutorial plans," the letter reads.

"The Committees learned that in some instances, high-ranking DOJ and FBI officials, including the FBI General Counsel James Baker and DOJ Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr, took the self-described ‘unusual’ step of inserting themselves into the evidentiary chain of custody."

The interview took place behind closed doors, and neither the transcript nor the letter spells out why the U.S. attorney’s office in Connecticut is leading the leak investigation.
