Former IRS official Lois Lerner will testify before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday despite having previously taken the Fifth, says the committee's chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa.
Issa, a California Republican, says Lerner was not offered immunity for her testimony, and he believes she has changed her mind because it is in her best interest. Issa delivered the news on
"Fox News Sunday."
Issa told Fox he expects "a good fact-finding hearing," adding that the committee has interviewed several people around Lerner.
"We know what she did in most cases. What we don't know is why she did it," he said.
Issa's committee voted previously that Lerner had waived her right not to testify because she testified under oath that she had broken no laws prior to asserting her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.
Lerner appears to have been in the center of the IRS targeting conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status as 501(c)4 organizations.
Lerner's emails indicated that there was pressure to crack down on conservative leaning groups, but it isn't clear where that pressure came from, Issa said. Her emails refer only to "they," he said.
"Only she can tell us what she thought that pressure was," Issa said.
