A man purported to be an ISIS terrorist posted a selfie to social media of him standing outside New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and wearing a logo of the Islamic State militant group, the Daily Mail reported.
The chilling image was uploaded to social media with the caption “We are in your backyard,” CBS News reported.
A second image was posted showing a man holding a smartphone displaying the ISIS logo in front of the One World Trade Center.
Eric Feinberg, the co-founder of GIPEC, a cyber-intelligence firm that monitors terrorism-related hashtags, said per the New York Daily News that the images began circulating on Saturday.
The New York City Police Department said it was aware of the photographs and investigations were being conducted, although there were no credible threats related to New York City.
The authenticity of the photos has not been determined but Feinberg said it should be taken seriously nonetheless.
Last year an image showing a phone screen displaying the ISIS flag with a New York City street in the background emerged days before Sayfullo Saipov killed eight people when he drove his truck down the cycle path running alongside the street, The Daily Mail noted.
Akayed Ullah claimed it was online Islamic State propaganda that moved him to detonate a pipe bomb strapped to his body at 42nd Street Subway station last year in a botched suicide bombing attempt.
